John Underwood

Vice President of IT and Manufacturing Services

Career:

Vice President of IT and Manufacturing Services John Underwood joined SEC as a Project Engineer in 1990. John was promoted to Engineering Manager in 1993. During his time in engineering he was responsible for managing the construction of eight new facilities and the expansions of two existing facilities as well as the installation of the production equipment. In 2009 he was asked to join the Microsoft Dynamics AX ERP implementation team coordinating capital projects, purchasing, spare parts inventory, and the MRO aspects of the AX implementation. In 2011 he joined the Finance group and was given the responsibility to develop operating budget and financial reporting tools that integrated with AX. In 2019 John was promoted to Senior Director of IT and Manufacturing Services with responsibilities for the Information Technology department and the Manufacturing Services department. In 2023, he was promoted to the role of Vice President maintaining his responsibilities for the Information Technology and the Manufacturing Services departments.

Education:

John earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor in Computer Programming from North Carolina State University in 1990. John also served 8 years in the United States Army Reserve as a Combat Engineer achieving the rank of Sergeant.

Social/Community:

John is very active in his local church. He has served in many capacities and he and his wife coordinated an outreach to the homeless community in the Asheville area for more than 10 years. He is an avid supporter of ABCCM through the United Way.

Personal:

John was born in Haywood County, but grew up in the Enka/Candler area. He and his wife, Jill, were married in 1986. They have three children and five grandchildren who John enjoys spending as much time as possible with. He loves to hike, fish, and camp. He also enjoys woodworking,  gardening, and attempting to become a beekeeper.
